Technically, Catcoin was designed to work as “Bitcoin on Scrypt.” This means the coin inherited all of the characteristics of Bitcoin, but substituted the Scrypt hashing algorithm for the SHA256 algorithm used by Bitcoin. During the early years, the coin suffered storms of intermittent miners, who would show up and throw massive processing firepower on the blockchain, causing the blocks to be generated much faster than the target of once every ten minutes. Then, when the difficulty adjusted to compensate for this increased processing activity, these miners would leave for more profitable chains, and sometimes it would take days for the next block to be mined with the dramatically reduced mining power on the Catcoin blockchain. In response to this, the Catcoin developers of Catcoin, after vigorous debate, implemented an agile algorithm based on a PID Controller used in the military, to compensate for changes in the processing power detected on the blockchain, to adjust the difficulty on the fly with every block, which largely took care of the intermittent miner issue. This algorithm has since been copied by other coin developers. Since the coin has operated very smoothly since implementing these changes, it has not needed further updates in the wallet software in quite some time. But stay tuned, there is more to come with this coin. While the Catcoin was released in 2013 (Genesis block is timestamped Mon, 23 Dec 2013 23:03:52 GMT), others have noticed the nice way this coin name sits comfortably across from Dogecoin as a cat-themed meme coin idea, and are using the name in a confusing way. But you will see - none of them can claim an earlier launch date than the original Catcoin. Stay tuned on clearing up this confusion, too! Just like its role model Bitcoin, Catcoin started life on the “fair distribution” model, meaning anyone could mine it from the outset, with no special “pre-mining” or “setting aside” for the developers or other insiders. Exactly like Bitcoin, it started with mining 50 coins per 10 minute block, then after 210,000 blocks were mined, graduated to 25 coins per 10 minute block. It will continue to experience “reward halving” every 210,000 blocks just like with Bitcoin. And also just like Bitcoin, the supply of Catcoins that can ever be created is limited to 21 million (unlike Dogecoin which as of this writing has 132 Billion 670 Million 764 Thousand 299 coins and will continue to inflate endlessly!).
